Misleading title. Hassabis is remaining as DeepMind’s chairman and Alphabet’s chief scientist. Dean and the other three aren’t “stepping down”- they’re leaving to found a new AI company.

Google is funding this new business and will hold a major equity share. Just like when a bunch of research scientists went left Google to start commonwealth fusion. Which Google owns a major stake in along with, an oil company chevron I think.
