Former German intelligence chief August Hanning and ex-colleague arrested on suspicion of espionage

Former German foreign intelligence chief (BND) August Hanning and his former colleague Manfred D. were arrested on October 6 on suspicion of espionage, attempted treason and selling state secrets, in one of the biggest spy scandals to engulf the agency since its creation in the mid-1950s. Hanning, who led the BND from 1998 to 2005, is accused of purchasing 2,000 highly classified documents and passing them to foreign intelligence services.
