Former German foreign intelligence chief (BND) August Hanning and a former office manager have been arrested on suspicion of treason and selling state secrets, in what is described as one of the biggest spy scandals to engulf the agency since its creation in the mid-1950s. Hanning, who led the BND from 1998 to 2005, is accused of purchasing 2,000 highly classified documents to resell through his private consulting network.
