Italy and Greece have asked the European Union for more fiscal wriggle room, with surging fuel prices and rising inflation adding to budgetary pressure on the bloc's two most indebted countries ahead of elections next year, the FT reports. Athens had been pressing Brussels to relax fiscal rules as the energy crisis deepens.
