Japan's population falls 3.17 million in five years to 122.97 million, 2025 census shows

Japan's 2025 census final count puts the population at 122.97 million, down 3.17 million over five years, with the share of people aged 65 and over at a record 29.4%. Single-person households now exceed 40% of all households, 34% of them elderly, and the foreign population rose 39.8%. Tokyo was the only prefecture to gain population.
