Japan tightens permanent residency rules from today; fee rises to ¥200,000

Japan's stricter permanent residency requirements take effect today, raising the income threshold above the average Japanese household level and lifting the application fee from ¥10,000 to ¥200,000. From April 2027, Japanese-language ability (roughly B1 or above) becomes part of the screening, and the spousal exception for Japanese nationals and permanent residents extends to five years of marriage and three years of residence.
