OpenAI engineer arrested, charged by DOJ for planting recording device in office

The DOJ says Saudi national Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, an OpenAI engineer since July 2025, was arrested and charged with intercepting oral communications after allegedly planting a recording device in an executive conference room at OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest. OpenAI fired him, traced the device with its own AI models, and says he did not access model weights, source code or customer data.
