US core PCE inflation slows to 3.0% y/y in August, lowest since February, after BEA methodology change

US core PCE price index rose 3.0% y/y in August, below the 3.3% estimate and the lowest since February, with the prior reading revised down from 3.3% to 3.0%; core PCE was 0.2% m/m vs 0.3% expected. Headline PCE rose 3.4% y/y vs 3.7% expected and 0.3% m/m vs 0.4% expected. The BEA simultaneously changed methodology for three categories — portfolio management fees, computer software and legal services — revising data back to 2021.
