US crude inventories rose 2.97M barrels last week, defying expectations of a draw

US Department of Energy data for the week ended 18 September showed crude oil inventories rose 2.969 million barrels versus an expected 690,000-barrel draw, with Cushing stocks up 2.266 million barrels and distillate down 428,000 barrels. Refinery utilisation fell 2.80%.
