US diesel average hits $6.28 a gallon, up 72% from a year ago, near record

The US national average diesel price is now $6.28 a gallon, up from $3.65 a year ago, a 72% increase, and 25 cents below the all-time record of $6.53 set in September, per AAA. Diesel futures jumped 4.5% on Tuesday to a three-week high.
