US Treasury sold euros to support yen, depleting ESF firepower

According to Financial Times, US officials sold euros and bought Japanese yen last Friday, informing the ECB only after the transaction. Joseph Wang commented that the Treasury has exhausted the Exchange Stabilization Fund's usable firepower for yen support, and further intervention is unlikely to work unless rate differentials change. Japan has also reportedly admonished the US over the move.
